The CareWorks Fund Awards Aging 100 with Unrestricted Grant

Caregiving, home care, bereavement and loneliness are pressuring every family, in every culture. Women of Color (WOC) disproportionately leave the workforce to provide care for elders. They also are core to the home care workforce, receiving limited pay, and pressured with stressful conditions. As society ages, the need for culturally adapted care is in high demand, yet the care access is decreasing quickly due to stress, inadequate pay, and burnout. Resourcing local solutions led by women representing the community is key to fueling the growth we need for care at home.

The CareWorks Fund, founded in 2024, by President and Chief Executive Officer (Interim) of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, Paurvi Bhatt, and managed by Health Equity Operations & Strategist, Renea Banks, deploys small unrestricted grants to 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations led by WOC who provide advocacy, support workforce solutions and deliver community-based care, bereavement, and end of life services for culturally diverse populations. It centers leadership, resources, and services with WOC who want to grow impact and attract greater resourcing.

We are so grateful to receive this grant and will use the funding to offer additional support and resources to family caregivers of seniors and older adults! We also extend a big thank you to Charityvest, the advisors of the CareWorks Fund, and the other recipients of the 2024 - 2025 CareWorks Fund!

Aging 100 Founder Accepted into the American Society on Aging's 2022-2023 ASA Rise Fellowship Program

The growth rate of the older adult population in the U.S. is rapidly diversifying in its racial and ethnic makeup, and the American Society on Aging (ASA) is committed to helping ensure that leaders of organizations serving older adults reflect this growing diversity.

In 2021, ASA launched ASA Rise, a 20-week intensive training and mentorship program, for BIPOC-identified professionals within the field of aging. The goal of the program is to improve well-being across an increasingly diverse aging population by creating a BIPOC leadership pool that improves policies and programs at the local, state and national levels. To accomplish this, the weekly virtual program will cover fundamental principles of advocacy, social justice and leadership development.

We are excited to share, our founder has been accepted into the 2022-2023 ASA Rise Fellowship program and joins 14 other amazing BIPOC leaders (read more about them here). This cohort will be referred to as “The Disruptors” because of their commitment to proactively disrupt and dismantle the structures at the core of the inequities that exists within the field of aging.

Along with disrupting structures, policies, practices, and behaviors that sustain unequal outcomes for older adults, fellows will complete a national project in collaboration with The National Council on Aging (NCOA). Research findings and outcomes of the project will be shared at On Aging 2023, the nation’s largest multidisciplinary conference on aging

We cannot wait to see what these Disruptors accomplish over the next few months!

ASA RISE is a launching pad for the next generation of aging leadership and is sponsored by The John A Hartford Foundation, the AARP Foundation, the Archstone Foundation, the RRF Foundation for Aging, CVS Health and Matz, Blancato & Associates.

Announcing our 501 (c) (3) Status to Expand Our Mission of Helping Seniors Reach the Age of 100 and beyond!

We are excited to announce, Aging 100 is now officially a public charity with tax-exempt status under Section 501 c3 of the United States Internal Revenue Code. This status will allow us to expand our fundraising activities and further our mission of helping seniors reach the age of 100 and beyond!

We are deeply grateful for contributions from our funders and supporters. Contributions donated to Aging 100 are tax-deductible.

Our immediate priorities:

  • Our red bag initiative. With COVID-19 hitting nursing homes the hardest, limiting visitations and immediate resources, we hope to distribute our red bags to more nursing homes and assistant living facilities. Our red drawstring bags are filled with toiletry items in addition to things that will keep seniors physically and mentally active.

  • Expanding our board: Along with our new official 501 (c) (3) status, we have invited some awesome community leaders to join our board. With their direction and leadership, we hope to take Aging 100 to new heights.

If you are interested in supporting our mission, please visit our donation page here. For questions about donations or programs, please contact us at info@aging100.org Thank you again!

The determination letter is available upon request.

Also note, we are a registered charity in the state of Georgia.

Things You Can Do, as a Senior, to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19

If you are a senior and have a serious underlying medical condition, here is what you can do:

  • Stay home if possible.

  • Wash your hands often.

  • Avoid close contact (6 feet, which is about two arm lengths) with people who are sick.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

  • Avoid all cruise travel and non-essential air travel.

  • Call your healthcare professional if you have concerns about COVID-19 and your underlying condition or if you are sick.

  • For more information on steps you can take to protect yourself, see CDC’s How to Protect Yourself

Stress and Coping

Older people are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 which may result in increased stress during a crisis.

Fear and anxiety about the COVID-19 pandemic can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions.

Things you can do to support yourself:

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories and social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.

  • Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.

  • Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.

  • Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.

  • Call your healthcare provider if stress gets in the way of your daily activities for several days in a row.

  • If you, or someone you care about, are feeling overwhelmed with emotions like sadness, depression, or anxiety, or feel like you want to harm yourself or others call

Centenarian's Dream Fulfilled with the Help of Aging 100

You only turn 100 years young once!

As 2019 came to an end, the team at Aging 100 was running around the city trying to create holiday magic for some under-served seniors in the local community. After donating a handful of gifts to a few seniors, we received a special request from our friends over at Second Wind Dreams.

Marie, a bubbly senior who loves to sing and dance, was turning 100 years old on December 18 and wanted to celebrate her birthday with her dear friends and awesome staff members at Royal Springs, a health care and rehabilitation center based in Las Vegas, NV.

A big surprise to Marie, Aging 100, along with Caesars Foundation and Royal Springs made her birthday celebration one to remember. The birthday girl enjoyed a big celebration with her favorite foods (scalloped potatoes and chocolate desserts) which were personally requested by Marie, great music and all of her friends.

Marie was so surprised and could not believe that her beautiful dream celebration came true. She cried tears of joy and said, “This is something unforgettable, something that I will always remember.”

We were so honored to help Marie celebrate her 100th birthday!
